Cohousing is a private home in a neighborhood designed for the joys of community

Everyone needs a place to call home, but that’s not all…

  • Cohousing provides a home with neighbors who know and engage with you and each other.
  • Cohousing provides spontaneous social opportunities that keep you engaged and feeling alive — whatever your age or abilities — just outside your door.
  • Cohousing provides opportunities to be neighborly — assisting others and accepting help when it’s needed.
  • Cohousing provides a direct voice in the decisions that affect your home and cohousing community.
  • And cohousing provides privacy in one’s own home whenever desired — with community right outside your door.

Cohousing communities help us thrive

Cohousing is a private home situated in a vibrant neighborhood. A cohousing community is designed by the prospective residents so that community spaces meet our human needs for connection. These needs are often difficult to meet in large apartment complexes and isolated single family neighborhoods. Other forms of housing are not built to create relationships. The rules of landlords and homeowners associations are not consented by the residents. Cohousing communities are designed and managed by the people who live in them, for all of the ways they want to live.

CohousingMN’s purpose

…is to catalyze the development of new cohousing communities across Minnesota. Our service area includes all of Minnesota and extends into a few counties in Wisconsin (Douglas, Pierce, and St Croix) because of their close economic ties with Duluth and St. Paul.

CohousingMN is a charitable not-for-profit organization focused on housing for social good. Yes, everyone does need a roof and a place to call home, but it’s not enough.
